Toronto, ON -- A debate Canadians thought was over has risen again, as Toronto hosts the “Largest Festival for Dogs in North America”. What organizers had hoped would be a cheeky opening event – Woofstock Weddings – has instead unleashed controversy about the meaning of marriage.
“We thought it would be fun to offer our four-legged friends access to the same traditions and institutions we hold so dear,” Vivian Shector explained. “And now our inbox is flooded with letters arguing marriage is between a male human and a female human. They say it’s not between a dog and a human, a male dog and a female dog, or same-sex dogs.”
Organizers from Focus on the Family Canada, in partnership with the US Chapter and the newly created National Organization for Marriage (NOM) have all issued statements on the matter and are promising to close Toronto streets if councillors don’t stop the event.
“The recent Tamil protests have proved highly illustrative on what one has to do to get attention. If Toronto wants to close down some streets so as to encourage a festival supporting inter-mammal marriage, then we will close down the remaining streets to celebrate traditional marriage,” FOFC and NOM both stated.
All three groups are also citing past comments by American Evangelist Pat Robertson who has been quite vocal in arguing that gay marriage is just the beginning of a slippery slope leading to “bestiality”, “child molestation”, and “pedophilia”.
Toronto city councillors and mayor David Miller have all refused comment on the matter. However, Miller seems to be making light of the matter on his twitter account: “ @NOM @FOF You’re right – this city is going to the dogs!”
